Abstract

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has faced an emergency in all aspects of health, social and economic life on an unprecedented global scale. And the travel and tourism sector was among the sectors with the greatest damage due to the very large drop in international demand in light of the global travel restrictions that were in place, whether the complete or partial closure of the borders, to confront the virus. However, the desire to travel and escape from everyday life still prevails, with the new possibilities offered by ICT. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) provide the ability to travel virtually through computer-generated environments, simulating real-life experiences and offering an alternative to travel. And with the scarcity of virtual reality studies in the field of tourism and the possibility of replacing it with the place of physical travel. Therefore, this paper aimed to investigate and confirm the ability of virtual reality to replace physical travel in times when travel possibilities are few due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. by developing and designing a 3D virtual tourism environment in Saudi Arabia applicable to Islands (Fursan and Damsk - Jazan).
