The Coronavirus continues to impact the norms of daily life for adults and children alike. In our original survival guide from the spring of 2020, we discussed planning for schooling from home, thinking that this would be necessary for a few weeks. However, now that we have been home for months and learning has been disrupted for almost a year, the new year provides us with a good opportunity to reassess and plan for the longer term. Two mothers, certified teachers and current education researchers, revisit this conversation with personal suggestions and curated resources to help families survive and even thrive this winter and spring. Dr. Alanna Bjorklund-Young and Dr. Angela R. Watson are researchers at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy. Alanna is the mother of two early learners (ages three and six), and Angela has a ten- and thirteen-year-old. Their children are currently in school via in-person, hybrid, synchronous virtual, and totally asynchronous virtual. Below...

From March 2020, almost all school-aged children across the UK were unable to attend school due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools pivoted to remote delivery of learning using a variety of online and offline resources. This report adds to a growing literature on how long-term school absence affects pupils and their families, and how remote learning might act to mitigate some of its effects. We describe the types and amount of remote learning provided by schools, and the amount of pupil and parent time spent engaging with school work at home. We also estimate how many pupils live with an adult classified as being at increased risk (clinically vulnerable or clinically extremely vulnerable) of serious illness should they contract Covid-19.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, learning from home was a new strategy implemented to ensure the teaching and learning process continued. Even though e-learning is accessible in universities, many academicians are not ready to implement it. This study aims to analyze the difficulties students face in implementing learning strategies from home during these social and physical restrictions. Through a basic qualitative research design, data collected through online questionnaire distribution techniques to 100 respondents was taken as a purposive random sample and analyzed with analytic induction techniques. The results showed that in implementing e-learning during the pandemic, students experienced two significant difficulties. First is the difficulty that comes from the pandemic, i.e., the lack of funds to buy internet data, unstable internet network, having the responsibility to help parents, and no internet access. Second are personal difficulties caused by physical and psychological f...

Back to School Amidst COVID-19 Impacts: A Perspective ReportAlthough the merits of in person learning outweigh those of virtual learning for elementary students, online learning is often implemented in response to rising cases of COVID-19. As such, the significant number of barriers to remote learning must be addressed in order to promote effective and health conscious learning for students during the pandemic. Students have been facing challenges with self-regulation, work management and lack of socio-emotional connections while teachers have been facing obstacles related to effectively using technology to deliver content and engage students. Parents have struggled to understand and fulfill their role supporting their children within the online school environment. Considering the perspectives presented in the literature, efforts should be made to promote connectedness and support for families during this difficult time. A resource toolkit is suggested for caregivers of children enrolled in online school to implement strategies at home to as...
