Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on thromboembolic events after arthroplasty: integrative review

Abstract

Knee and hip arthroplasty is a recognizedly effective treatment for advanced arthrosis, improving pain and quality of life for affected patients. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay in the performance of surgeries, worsening the comorbidities of these patients in addition to an increase in thromboembolic events caused by the coronavirus infection. Objective: To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on thromboembolic events after knee and hip arthroplasty surgery. Methods: This is an integrative review, with a search from June to August 2022 in the PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases. Results: after reading the articles found in the databases, 05 articles were selected for this review. Conclusion: The prevention of thromboembolic events after knee and hip arthroplasty is part of routine postoperative care. The COVID-19 pandemic, with the consequent postponement of scheduled elective surgeries and with some controversy in the literature, increased the number of thromboembolic events after arthroplasty surgeries.
