Abstract

Purpose: This study examined factors affecting occupational stress among bank employees from the Prayagraj region . To gauge the level of stress experienced by employees of the bank under study. To estimate the relationships between the dependent variable job stress and the independent variables - work life imbalance, job overload, relationship at workplace, job control and job characteristics. To evaluate the predictive values of job stress.

Design/methodology/approach: It is an empirical study with reference to the employees of State Bank of India, Private sector Banks and the Co- operative sector Banks in select state Prayagraj region . To test the validity of this belief the researcher had undertaken a study of Factors affecting Occupational Stress Among Bank Employees. The total sample size of 936 respondents comprising 320 respondents belonging to SBI were chosen, 302 respondents from private banks and 314 respondents from cooperative banks were taken for the study. The collected data have been analyzed and interpreted by the application of statistical tools such as weighted mean, Correlation analysis, Regression Analysis. ANOVA, Critical ratio analysis and percentages. When stress is properly channelized it results in a feeling of challenge, high satisfaction in the job, creativity, effectiveness, better adjustment to work and life.

Findings: There is a strong need for a thorough analysis of the increasing spread of negative health outcomes that work-related stress may assume in a very changing organizational context as the banking one. Stress Management is drawing more and more attention in the present scenario particularly in the corporate sector. There is no such thing as a stress- free job. Employees in their work are prone to tension, frustration and anxiety in the duties that are assigned to them. Banks and Bank employees are playing a very important role in the economic development of the country. It is generally believed by the common man that employees of Banks may not experience stressors in their jobs when compared to other occupations.

Practical implications: In this manuscript, the intention is to assess the scale of the phenomenon and how far it relates specifically to the processes of bank organization. In particular, through a review of the literature, the main studies dealing with work-related stress in banking, so that the study could reach a better understanding of the phenomenon (epidemiology of work-related stress, health problems related to work-related stress, risk factors, health outcomes as an effect of work-related stress, consequences for the organization) as it relates specifically to this set of workers.

Originality/value: Despite the existence of a plentiful Literature on work-related stress, the study of this phenomenon in the banking sector is still limited, although it falls into the field of collective health. This review can support stakeholders and institutions agencies responsible for monitoring workplaces to frame the issue as well as to develop prevention and protection strategies.
