Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic generated a new communication universe with numerous informing actors, including conspiracy theory promoters who spread skepticism about the authenticity of the pandemic and the necessity of health emergency regulations. This study explores the dissemination of COVID-19 conspiracy theories in Canada in order to create a model for verifying conspiracy theories. Three types of conspiracy theory promoters identified via empirical research are presented. A model for verifying a conspiracy theory is introduced. Conspiracy theories are characterized as a form of folkish storytelling and entertainment that are dangerous in the current state of health emergency and should be publicly discredited and discarded.
