Background

Context and objective: Since the end of 2019, Algeria, as well as all countries in the world, is confronted with an unprecedented epidemiological situation: Covid-19. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Covid-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit.

Material(s) and Method(s)

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of Covid-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit of the Bab El Oued University Hospital between 22 March 2020 and 23 March 2021. The parameters of interest included epidemiological, clinical and paraclinical (radiological, virological) data.

Result(s)

Results: A total of 340 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 68 ± 15 years. The majority of patients (66.5%) were male. Regarding comorbidities, 64.8% of the patients had at least one medical comorbidity, including hypertension (62.4%) and diabetes (49.5%). The most frequent clinical signs were fever (68%), dyspnea (66.2%), asthenia (63.2%) and cough (52.6%). The case fatality rate was 66.5% for all patients admitted to the intensive care units.

Conclusion(s)

Conclusion: Patients at risk of intensive care units admission were predominantly elderly and male, with at least one comorbidity and a high risk of mortality, highlighting the need to limit exposure and early management of this vulnerable population.
