On the relation of self-efficacy and coping with the experience of childbirthObjective: To analyze the relationship between self-efficacy expectancies, the use of coping behavior strategies during labor and satisfaction after childbirth. Methods: A quantitative observational design was applied as part of a correlational study conducted in the maternity unit of a Hospital Complex that welcomes nearly 4,000 births each year at Vigo, Spain, between 2014 and 2015. A total of 276 low-risk pregnant women were recruited to undertake a self-assessment of their childbirth experience at two stages: within the last three months of pregnancy and within two weeks after labor. Data were collected through the Childbirth Self-Efficacy Inventory to measure self-efficacy expectancies as well as coping, along with a 6 items, 10-point Likert scale to measure satisfaction after childbirth. Results and conclusions: Pearson product-moment correlation supported the positive association of self-efficacy expectancies scores with coping during labor. Multivariate regression analysis als...

Background: Parenting is a process of being a parent to one’s offspring. This process enables the couple to plan for a child, give birth to it and care for it throughout. Before the arrival of her new born, the mother should get prepared to parent her new born as her pregnancy advances. Aims and Objectives: To determine the perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy and coping of mothers of preterm infants admitted in NICU and postnatal wards in tertiary care hospitals. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted using the Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy (PMP S-E) tool, which was developed to measure selfefficacy in mothers of premature infants by using non-probability purposive sampling technique among 61 mothers of preterm infants delivered at 3236 weeks ofgestation. Results: Majority (78%) of the mothers had average coping. The mean and standard deviation ofthe perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy was 58.8 ± 8.7. There was a positive ...

Cross-cultural adaptation of the Preterm Parenting Self-efficacy ChecklistObjective: To conduct a cross-cultural adaptation of the Preterm Parenting & Self-Efficacy Checklist to the Brazilian Portuguese. Method: A methodological study was carried out with 51 parents of premature infants. Data analysis was based on psychometric and inferential statistical analyses. Results: The instrument content validation by experts obtained excellent agreement (97%) and the semantic analysis by the target population showed good understanding of the terms and ease of use. In test-retest, most participants were female (64.7%); and parents with higher education (47.1%). The instrument showed stability over time, with good internal consistency (α = 0.84). Four factors were generated in the subscales parenting self-efficacy, importance of tasks and self-perceived parental competence (67.0% to 74.2% of the variance). Conclusion: The properties of the Preterm Parenting & Self-Efficacy Checklist – Brazilian Version were maintained, which is a reliable indicator to evaluate the ...

Self-efficacy in Infant Care Scale: Development and psychometric testing2006 •
Abstract The Self-Efficacy in Infant Care Scale (SICS) is a self-administered measure to assess maternal judgments about the ability to care for the baby during the first year of life. The SICS was initially composed of 67 items and was tested on 397 Thai mothers with infants < 12 months old. The test demonstrated adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Factor analysis yielded 42 items with five dimensions of self-efficacy in infant care. With an acceptable model fit using confirmatory factor analysis, a final version of the SICS contained 40 items with four dimensions of self-efficacy in infant care: developmental promotion, general health care, safety, and diet. This preliminary test for the psychometric properties revealed that the SICS has potential uses for both research and clinical purposes. However, the model selected must be viewed as tentative; further refinement is suggested.
